These features are guaranteed to improve your workflow. He walks you through the new commit feature, which quickly bounces a track or selection to audio while giving you the option to hide the source track. He even shows you how to commit a track up to a specific insert, giving you the option to leave certain FX out of the source while printing and apply them to the print. Another new feature that will surely improve your workflow is the ability to print midi to audio simply by dragging a midi clip onto an audio track.

The next feature Paul goes over is the clip transparency feature. If you drag a clip using the grabber tool, the clip’s new waveform position overlays the old position. This allows you to control the shape of fade ins, outs, and crossfades while applying it to multiple clips at once. In this video we take a quick and dirty look at the basics of how the input monitoring button works. In previous versions we would switch our input mode for all tracks between Auto Input and Input Only mode.

But now we can select just the tracks we want to monitor input from. This is a welcome and needed addition to Pro Tools. Previously we would ARM a track to listen to it. Now you can just select the Track Monitor Button, no need to arm.

Of course you would need to Arm/Record Enable the track if you are going to record. Take a spin through the manual so you fully understand how and when to use each button.

Pro Tools 12.1.0 brought several more features as well, increased track count, AFL/PFL Solo Modes, and more. If you have Pro Tools 12, be sure to go ahead and update! This time we will be discussing how to Import Audio into a session. There are three ways that I generally like to do this. Audio to track 2.

Audio to track is the most common and your best bet when importing large audio files such as instrumentals or mix stems (Command + Shift + I.) By default it slides the audio to the start of the session and puts it onto its own track. The workspace is another way I like to import audio into ProTools (option +;) Once you locate the audio that you are looking for within the workspace simply click the sound to preview, and then drag it on to the edit window to create a new audio track. This is most useful when pulling in smaller samples such as.wav drum samples, riffs, etc.

The last option I use is the Finder. The one drawback of using the workspace is that you cannot preview drum sounds while the session is playing back. When this is the case and I would like to hear how a kick would sound within the rest of my mix before dragging it in, I can locate my drum samples in the finder, hit the spacebar, and listen to the kick while the session is playing back. The Chord track can control multiple software features and instruments. Once you combine this with some simple production techniques, you are well on your way to composing and creating an authentic songwriting demo. Co-writing is a huge part of the music industry and Cubase 8 with the Chord Assistant is the music software to take it to another level. Apart from gaining royalties, co-writing offers an opportunity to collaborate with other people in order to achieve a song that can be released to the market.

Co-writing is a team play and individuals play off each other to find ways around musical roadblocks. In this video, the Chord Assistant plays the role of the co-writer and offers musical suggestions to help us form a structure that could be used as a verse. We look at co-writing with the chord track and some very simple backing techniques, which we will develop later in the video series. We hope you find this video entertaining and useful. You will also need to visit my web page if you want to download my drum programming cheat sheet and the drum map file I have created for the MT Power Drum Kit at This is a companion video to my other complete beginner’s guide to drum programming in Reaper which you can view on my web page above or on YouTube at The first video has a very detailed step by step guide on how to build up your own drum tracks from scratch. However it does use a drum instrument that does not ship with Reaper.

In this video you can see how to install and use the MT Power Drum Kit instead. The MT Power Drum Kit enables you to quickly put together tracks with pre-programmed intros, grooves and fills, which you can then hand edit if you wish. It can also be used if you want to create your own patterns as shown in my first video. So once you have mastered the basics of how to use a drum plugin and hand edit in your chosen DAW (Reaper in this case) you can then move on and really up your game with the book alongside.
